Hi De Hi

Ho De Ho

Hope you all had a jolly Christmas. If you had a miserable one, just think of those immortal words:-

'It's all for the best in this best of all possible worlds.'

And so it is.

I don't really want Plumsteadshire to be focused on pubs in Plumstead, but as this has been the local news hot potato, here's my latest contribution.

I walked over to The Woodman today and took a look through the olde worlde pubbe windows. Looks good. It's got that contemporary look which doesn't say 'old man's pub'. It's got a certain Bromley-post-modern-soft-and-fast-seating-area feel about it. I don't know what The Woodman was like in the past but as long as it's a genteel non-offensive place with good beer and food, I'll be there.

Here's a picture of it taken on a typically tropical Plumstead day.

Plumstead IS the best of all possible worlds. You can enjoy miles of green chain walk, or stroll along the thames forever, and in twenty minutes you can be "up London" or enjoying the bustle and bargains of Powis Street. A neighbourhood as cosmopolitan as the UN General Assembly, and to crown it all the Common too. If ever I am miserable I think how lucky I am to live in PLUMSTEAD!

A defence of Powis Street in song:

We three kings of orient are
From Plumstead and Welling we come from afar
We proffer our pound, we brandish our buck
And hear punters shout f*** f*** f***

Ohhhh…

Woolwich is one classy bazaar
Your pound will stretch here ever so far
Jingling tills and happy folk
Friends CafĂ© if you’ll stand the smoke

Ohhhh…

Primark and Poundland are raking it in
Most of the punters aren’t very thin
Affluence-challenged, they may be poories,
But at least they don’t vote for the Tories!

Ohhhh…

Abracadabra’s sadly missed
An Alladin’s cave, a bargain-lover’s tryste,
A sad day for the British nation
When Woolwich succumbs to Tesco’s domination

Ohhhhh…

Let me be in Powis Street!
Woolwich shopping’s such a treat!
I’ll go home laden with bargains galore
Can’t wait to go back some more!

Still nowhere near convinced about Woolwich but am sold on the Woodman.
On a non pub related post, does anyone know a good electrician and someone who can clear gardens?

Re. electrician - I can heartily recommend Micheal Smee based here in Plumsteadshire: MWS Electrical Services Ltd 0208 265 2499. He did a rewiring job of our old house which was not earthed and had very old crumbling wires and old fuse switch unit. It was basically a deathtrap of a house for electrics! But Smee made us safe again! And gave official certificates of guarantee for all work he did when he finished. He is registered with the NICEIC (www.niceic.org.uk), was very reliable, honest, hard-working and fairly priced. He replaced all the wires and installed new modern fuse unit and worked long hours until the job was done, making as little mess as possible. And it was a big messy job replacing all those wires behind walls, under the floors in the ceiling, etc. But he brought his own hoover to clear up with, and put back floor boards and carpet as was. Good luck!

BTW, you'll see Angie's Angels on the NICEIC website - they are not angels! They don't turn up when scheduled, and are rude about it when you ring to find out why they didn't show for the appointment. They also seem to be overpriced (especially compared with Smee)!

Thanks for the electrician's details I shall call him this week. Don't suppose you used a painter/decorator for your house? We need to get the hallway and landing painted and the ceilings too, any heads up on anyone?
Also I need to register with a Doctor and Dentist now we are in Plumstead as my Doctor is in Wimbledon and my Dentist in Norfolk, neither of which is particularly helpful! Any recommendations?
