My son was in the same class as his youngest daughter (the one not "in care" - yet, I assume).

DC's idea of parental interest was to make a big entrance in the middle of the Nursery/Reception shows: Bang goes the external door; bang goes the internal door; a slow-moving, aloof-looking DC moves through the hall to his viewing position. Stands with walking-stick and flash-but-cheap-looking-suit (and no socks - shock, horror) - eyes dodging hither and thither to see whether he has drawn attention. Unfortunately, he has mine, briefly. Watch the teachers and parents cringe as, at the end of the show, he kisses their hands. Shudder. And feel slightly nauseous. I did.

Whoever made the comment about The Woodman can you shed anymore light?
Oh and headless driver I said aim high and I don't expect for things to change overnight but I don't see why this is so unreasonable.
There seems to be a collective of people who are interested in welcoming new initiatives (although not discos) to the area. The commons in London are the areas that predomininantly become more up and coming before the rest of the areas (Plum Comm is already a damn site better than the high street which I know is not hard).
So Cafe Rouge, Tescos, the new Woodman and The Ship - I am not daft enough to realise this would all be a dream but something has to change...

I read the guest book page and noticed that many of the posts were by people including "1%" in their name, I know what a 1%er is, do you? It may scare you to find out.

Are you allowed to tell?

The Cafe Rouge thing is it a ploy? Doesnt seem to work...

Anonymous said...

It's not a ploy. And it does work. I set it up.
You have to give your email address and reply to the automatic email sent to you in order to validate your signature on the petition; otherwise one person from one email address can enter a billion signatures. It is not a ploy, so please do sign it if you would patronise Cafe Rouge if one openned in Plumstead Common.
The idea is to lobby Cafe Rouge, or similar, to see if they'd open a place up here in Plumstead Common. If we can demonstrate interest, perhaps we might get the kind of place we want around here sooner than later.

I think there is a bit of a problem with Cafe Rouge etc though. There is no planning consent for a restaurant nor will there be. All cos of extractor fans and residential properties . . .

Cafe Rouge (or similar) anywhere on the common is the idea, not at the Ship premises. There are several places it could be: corner of Warwick Terrace near the closed-down cake shop, old post office, and squatters' house; on the Slade; toilet 'showroom' on Plumstead Common Road... or... do we really NEED so many estate agents??

I think this website should tell you enough about what a 1%er is: http://bikernews.obworld.com/. Read this site carefully.

oh dear. so one percenters are basically a gang, considering themselves 'outlaws'.

i found this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_percenter

1%er is not a gang, it is a type of gang or gang member. 1%er, as I'm sure you are now aware, is an outlaw biker, that doesn't necessarily mean a member of The Outlaws, or that The Outlaws are criminals.

Thought I had better clarify, as I am a biker and have alot of respect for other bikers, it's just that ot seemed like there was alot of 1%ing going on on The Albert blog.

Cafe Rouge??!
ha ha...that's not even good!

I'd love to see the common become a more attractive area, but I don't beleve this will be achieved by filling it with the same chains as every other identikit highstreet in the country.
Perhaps there are some of you out there who could pool your enthusiasm and open an independent eatery between you?

Anonymous said...

Failing that, Cafe Rogue would be nice. Better to have a chain than NOTHING.

Yeh!!!

I've written a letter to McDonalds telling them what an opportunity they are missing!

BTW. I've heard that the consortium buying out the video shop is Busta & Bev...not sure yet what they are planning to do with the place but as soon as I know I'll let you all know...

The Five idlers of Plumstead Common.

The Star which doesn't shine in the sky,
The Woodman who doesn't cut down trees,
The Ship that cannot sail the seas,
The Mill which doesn't grind corn
And Who'd a Thought it!

I NOTE THERE IS NO MENTION OF THE PRINCE ALBERT!

Headless, I don't know what you mean...I always find that they welcome me with open arms and thank me for my custom when I leave their premises...they are such friendly people.

I love the COOP though...my first experince of going in their was having to jump out of they way of one of the shelf stackers whilst they motored down one of the 'lanes' on her mates motorised scooter...wouldn't change it for the world (perhaps apart from the 'COOP QUEUE'. Why is it you go in there and it's empty and by the time you get to the counter there's at least a 6 people strong queue?

anyone notice the 'save the albert' signs outside the Prince Albert Pub? Comes at the same time we locals receive a leaflet re. Plumstead Manor School development. What helps the area.... a better school with better facilities for local kids or yet another (dodgy) pub?

Well there was a sign outside The Albert but after an evening of one to many drinkies .... i ripped it down, then i ran ... very fast.
