Pub design

By the by, whoever has redesigned The Woodman has shown that they understand aesthetics. No, nothing to do with East London in 2012.

The exterior of The Woodman looks great. Care and attention to signage, use of colour and type.

On the other hand, The Ship formerly known as The Ship, has failed miserably. The gold 3D lettering does not work at all. Look at the typeface. Look how cramped it looks on the elevation. If you want to take the traditional route, then at least use a serif typeface.

The Wife and I popped into the Woodman for a pint this evening, and are happy to report that the overhaul is a vast improvement on the previous incarnation, which i visited once 5 years ago and never went again.

I noticed the 'under new management' sign on the windows in summer, so this really seems like a step in the right direction.

Someone has put some thought into the interior design, complete with leather sofas, contemporary wallpaper, new toilets and a bar with a decent finish. An added bonus of San Miguel and Kronenbourg on tap as well.

The design certainly has much more of an identity and character than The Ship appears to have (from what i can see through the windows anyway), with everything painted white and someone's idea of 'classic' paintings on the walls.

The Woodman's back room is yet to be completed, but the flooring is stacked up in a corner ready to go.

I don't know if food is on the cards - i'm not sure if they did it before.

Also not sure if there's been a change of clientele, but there was no evidence tonight of the significantly underaged patrons that used to frequent the place until recently.

So, unlike The Ship, The Woodman is open for business now, and i would recommend it to all visitors to Plumsteadshire as a place for a pleasant drink. It certainly seems the best place Plumstead Common has to offer right now.

On the Woolwich front, if anyone is after a quiet, smoke free coffee and a decent sandwich/bagel/toastie/potato etc, then Coffee Co under the Vista building in Woolwich (next to Sainsbury's), is great. We always used to go to Friends Cafe, but it does get a bit smokey. Costa being there is great, but there's never change from a tenner.

Anyone proposing to invest £250m in the regeneration of Woolwich town centre, even if it is Tesco, has got to be a positive move for all of us.

See you in The Woodman.

Am very excited to visit. Took a drive past the other day and it did indeed look rather lovely. I can only hope for food in the place. Lets hope The Ship follows suit and we will be spoilt for choice (not forgetting The Star and its quiz night)!
Come on Plumstead, lets have 2007 as the year for some smartening up. In fact I am sure there seemed some more decent looking folk at the station this morning waiting for the 8.17..
Get thee all to the garden centre for some pot plants for thy front gardens.

Does it really, really matter what typeface a pub uses? As long as the sign is legible (which it is) I think its fine. I mean you could be complaining that the apostrophe is misplaced in 'Bust 'a Rhyme' but luckily that aint happening.

What a pedant you are Mr Pangloss ! I think you will find san serif is a very legible font and used quite a lot in moden design. Do you read the Time with Times font ? very nice font for Tory Twats !

I popped into the Woodman over the weekend and spoke with the very friendly bar maid. She too was very pleased with the new beautiful decor - and it IS really beautiful, classy!

She confirmed food will be served in the restaurant area which is yet to be completed in the back part of the pub. They will serve food all week I believe, including Sunday lunches! I do believe this could be the gastro pub we were all hoping for!

reminder to everyone, tonight (Thursday 11th ) is the public meeting about the ship

the more of us attend, the more likely it is that the council will be measured in its response and encourage the good operation of this place
