modern manners

Modern manners. Is this an oxymoron?

Well, that's a rant for another day. For the moment, I'd like to know one thing.

I'm going to an engagement party and have never been to one before. Should I take a present to this party? It's an informal do.

many thanks,
Doctor Pangloss

I would if I've been invited to a party.

I think etiquette is the word you want, rather than manners.
Personally I wouldn't get an "engagement present" - I've never heard of such a thing. Save your money and buy them a nice wedding present when the time comes is my advice..
Now if it was a birthday party.....

If you take a bottle of something along, even if not everyone takes a present then at least you don't look/feel like a tight-arse!

You should always take a present even if it is a token gesture to someone if they are hosting a party (or dinner). I would suggest taking a bottle of something - ideally champagne (and a card).
It doesnt need to be extravagant, a bottle of Sainsbury's champers will do, but I think it is a nice thought and good etiquette and besides I like buying presents for people and you know how nice it feels when people buy you gifts too.
Have fun!
