Over the past month or so, I've noticed Chinook helicopters around London; they're really distinctive as they have two rotor blades.
Maybe they've always flown around London but never really noticed them, or are we on high terrorist alert?
Still, they're kind o' pretty in a 'troop-carrier-war-machine' sort of way.

I've noticed them also - ever since the 7 july bombings, and perhaps even before then. Wonder if there's a connection?
I have seen and heard them around London since before 7/7 - they have a very distinctive sound. Remember that Chinook crash in Scotland where over a dozen top intelligence bods died? They are apparently used as personnel and VIP [ + limousines] carriers by the armed forces and intelligence services. I've seen them coming in over City Airport, and at least once over the Royal Arsenal Barracks.
yeah they've definitely been around for a while.... i can remember seeing them as a kid in sw14!
I've seen them for a while too, before the bombings. I've also seen the new(ish) Apache attack helicopters and what I think were Puma transports a number of times.
I read somewhere that they use the Thames as a navigational aide or something, hence why we see a lot of them.
I've seen the Chinhooks circling over Greenwich on a few occasions too so it's not as simple as us just being under some kind of helicopter motorway.

They've been around this area for years. They quite often land at the garrison, when there are exercises on - transporting troops, equipment, etc.
